California and Spencer’s first cold

This past weekend we went to California for Curt Fischer’s wedding. Trips to California are always hard for us, since we know quite a few people there, and never have time to visit them all. This time we chose the Buchheits and Aunt Jean. We arrived on Thursday evening and stayed with the Buchheits. Our flight was delayed over 2 hours, which made for a pretty miserable trip. Had it been on time, Spencer would have been falling asleep with a full belly right around boarding time. We also got stuck in the last row, and every time the bathroom door slammed it would wake him up. Eventually he did sleep for about the last 30-45 minutes of the 2 1/2 hour flight.

We had a nice time visiting with the Buchheits in Los Altos Thursday evening and Friday morning. Spencer really enjoyed playing with Thomas, who is almost one year old now. Then we headed down to Monterey where the wedding was being held. We were invited to the rehearsal dinner at El Torito, at 7 p.m. Spencer was a very good boy the whole time, as is frequently the case. Unfortunately though, he started getting sick Friday night. He woke up several times during the night. Clare ran out around midnight to buy some infant tylenol, which took away a bit of the pain and helped him sleep.

Saturday morning we went to the wedding, which was on the beach at Carmel River State Park. Spencer slept through the whole ceremony. Then we got back to the hotel around 12:30 to meet Aunt Jean, who had driven down from San Rafael to hang out with Spencer. We had lunch at the Fish Hopper, where Bob and Jean Ann frequently dined. Then the Fedibbletys took a nap while Jean Ann toured around Monterey a bit. Jean Ann then looked after Spencer while Clare and I went to the reception at the Monterey Bay aquarium. It was very impressive.

Spencer didn’t sleep that well Saturday night either, but slept most of the ride back to the airport on Sunday, and slept most of the flight home, which was thankfully not delayed. He slept much of Monday and today, but now seems to be getting better. We feel really bad for the little guy. Unfortunately there is not that much we can do, besides turn on the humidifier, give him some tylenol, rub a little vicks on his chest, and suck the snot out of his nose. I’m sure this is only the first of many colds. Hopefully they won’t be too frequent. On the plus side, he managed to give us some smiles in spite of the cold. What a trooper!

I recommend overexposing when shooting backlit subjects without flash.

Thanks for the tip Gabe. Are you referring to the picture at the Fish Hopper?

I don't know what a Fish Hopper is, but I'll assume yes. IMG_0449 and IMG_0445 are images that could use more exposure.

Is there a difference in quality between adjusting the exposure on the camera vs. editing the picture with a tool like Picasa after the fact?

It's always better to get it right in-camera. In this case, you would avoid noise in the shadow detail becoming visible when you lighten it.
