I can haz botl?

I can haz botl?

A couple weeks ago we decided to take Spencer for his first camping trip. We were successful in several key elements:

  • Set up tent (Spencer was nice enough to sleep while we did this)
  • Take a hike (Spencer always enjoys a hike)
  • Make a fire (even though it was raining a bit)
  • Cook rice and beans over the fire (came out very nicely)
  • Make S’mores

We failed at several key elements:

  • Make Spencer warm bottle (well, eventually we heated up some water over the fire and put the bottle in that, but he was very unhappy in the meantime)
  • Sleep (Our tent is too small. Spencer was pretty warm and comfortable, but Clare and I were not. The only way to get comfortable was to touch the sides of the tent, and then we got wet)

We ended up leaving at midnight. Fortunately it was only a 45 minute drive home, but it did kind of mess up our internal clocks for the weekend. For our next attempt in a few weeks with Dave and Ellen, we will have a bigger tent, and I bought a propane camp stove, which should speed up the warming of bottles.

On our first trip we also forgot the camera, so there is no evidence of the trip. But every post should have a photo, so instead, we have supplied a picture of Spencer trying to hold his bottle. It seems that he is dead set on becoming independent. Unfortunately, he is not very good at holding the bottle, and will frequently yank it out of his mouth, then cry because he is not getting food.

Spencer has started to get interested in toys in the last couple weeks, especially one that make some rattling and crumpling noises. Here is a little video of him playing with two of his favorite toys.

A memorable Memorial Day

Still catching up on a few old posts. For memorial day, Uncle Phil, Aunt Betty and their daughter Melissa came over for a barbecue. We got lucky and it didn’t rain while we were trying to barbecue, though we ended up eating inside. We made our usual mixed grill with some buffalo brats, locally grown beef hamburgers, veggie burgers, and grilled vegetables (eggplant, mushrooms, and bell peppers). We also had all of my favorite salads. Since I was busy cooking, I only snapped a few pictures.

Green Red Rocks

The Feltys by the entrance to Red Rocks

While it wasn’t raining during Harold and Fran’s visit, we took a little trip over to the Red Rocks amphitheater. It is only a few miles west of Golden, just in the foothills. As the name implies it has Red Rocks. In the 30′s they began building an amphitheater in the rocks as part of the CCC started by FDR. It was finally finished in the 40′s, and has had many concerts since then. Artists really like to play there, since it has such great natural acoustics. During the day it is free to visit, and many people go there to work out, climbing all the stairs.

The last time we visited it was quite brown, but it has been raining very much lately, so this time it was quite green.

We also made a short stop at Lookout Mountain to see Buffalo Bill’s grave and the nice view. Even though it was quite cloudy, you could barely make out downtown Denver, and Clare got a few nice shots of the Coor’s brewery and South Table mountain, near where she works.

Spencer playing with his keys and his grandpa

Spencer got to spend some nice quality time with Grandma and Grandpa Felty over Memorial Day weekend. He has certainly grown a lot since they saw him last (one week old). They had a good time playing on the floor and exploring toys, which Spencer has just started to become interested in.
