About

Having lived at the Twin Springs property just north of Spencer, Indiana for 18 months, Clare and Rob are now in the suburbs of Denver. Our blog focuses mostly on home improvement, and our children — Spencer, born February 21st 2009, and Margaret, born February 27th 2011.

Twin Springs

The house

The house

Clare’s parents, Ellen and Dave, bought the property in the late 1970’s, aiming to fulfill their dream of living off the land.

When they bought the land, there was a trailer on the property. They lived in the trailer for about a year, while building a small cabin. Then they lived in the cabin for about 3 years while working on the house. The house started small (about 600 sq. ft.), but after several additions is now about 2,000 sq. ft. The last building to go up was the garage, which replaced an old barn.

Dave and Ellen moved to Arizona around 1999, and rented out the house for about 8 years. It is a big house and property to maintain, and the renters let many things deteriorate, and simply destroyed some things. Clare and Rob moved into the house in June of 2007, with the help of both of their parents. We are working on making the house nicer again. It is quite an adventure. We hope that our friends and family enjoy reading about our trials and tribulations, and that we will have a written record for ourselves. And maybe. Just maybe, a few random strangers will find some of our home improvement documentation helpful for their own projects.

One last note, Ellen and Dave have posted some old pictures from the 1980’s of building the home. We are grateful for their addition to the blog, and for having the tenacity to build their own home. They are very inspiring.

After trying our hands at home improvement in Spencer, Indiana, work took us to Denver. Clare is working at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, figuring out how to make cellulosic ethanol (from the corn stalks, not the part we eat).

After searching for a few months, we found a house in a very convenient location that needed some fixing up. We love living within walking distance of several grocery stores and restaurants, while at the same time having a basement to store our junk, and a little yard to grow some vegetables. Maybe the suburbs aren’t so bad after all.
