Dump truck play

Meg and Spencer playing with the dump truck

While Spencer continues to be pretty good in terms of sharing toys with Meg, he does occasionally do the thing where he only wants to play with whatever toy Meg is playing with. Yesterday while I was making moussaka for dinner Meg was playing with the big Tonka truck Ellen had gotten Spencer a couple years ago, and Spencer was getting jealous. Clare finally resolved the situation by suggesting that Spencer could push Meg around in the dump truck, which kept them both happy for quite awhile. Then at some point Spencer got tired of pushing Meg around, and wanted Meg to push Spencer around. We weren’t quite sure she could do it, but in typical Meg style, she pushed him quite well! She still has to learn how to steer a bit though.

Meg walking

Meg has been getting really good at walking in the last couple weeks. Just in the last couple days, she has started to switch from mostly crawling to mostly walking. It is pretty exciting to watch her. We are especially impressed by how well she can pivot, and can walk a few steps, stop, then walk some more. She is also really good at bending over and picking stuff up, and then bending back up (though in this video she does fall down when bending over). Today I finally got a pretty good little video of her walking. It also features Spencer playing with some monster trucks, and Great Aunt Jean encouraging both of them. And like all good baby videos, it ends with Meg trying to get the camera.

New drumset

Today we received boxes 2 and 3 of the 3 boxes Great Aunt Jean recently sent us, which were filled with a kid’s drumset. Jeff had given it to Billy quite a few years ago, and he has since outgrown it. It was packed very well, and arrived in wonderful condition. I eagerly put all the pieces together. Spencer seemed quite excited about it, though he didn’t want to play it until I sat down and started playing my kit too. Thank you so much Jeff, Jean Ann, Billy, Shannon, Kristen, and Bill!

What is it?

In spite of the fact that Clare and I had a nasty cold over Christmas, we had a very nice time. We did end up not going over to Phil and Betty’s as planned, but we did manage to muster up enough strength between each blowing of the nose to play with the kids.

We spread out present opening over 2 days, which was a good idea. So on 24th we opened presents from each other, and on the 25th, we opened presents from “Santa Claus”. Spencer opened all the presents for everyone. He was very excited, and at each present would say “what is it?”

Crashing

For the last several months, one of Spencer’s favorite games has been crashing. This involves running into each other and falling down. It is quite fun. Here he teaches grandpa how to do it.

Last Saturday we went to the railroad museum for their special Santa train. It was really packed, but we didn’t have to wait in line much at all, partially because we have a membership, and we also happened to get there at a good time. We rode the train, had some hot chocolate, and Spencer got to play with the toy trains. We also got to ride a bus back and forth from the overflow parking lot, which was fun for Spencer.

Cookies

Cookie tray - spritz, peppernuts, and cut-out cookies

This past weekend we made Christmas cookies. We did a gender stereotype reversal – Clare, Ellen, and Meg went to get a christmas tree, while Dave, Spencer, and I stayed home to make cookies. Spencer was much more helpful than I had imagined, and he stayed on task until we finished the cookies. Saturday we made Spritz cookies. It had been a long time since I had made them, so I was little bit out of practice. The dough was a bit too stiff, which made pumping it out of the cookie press difficult. I saw in the instructions that one can add an egg yolk to remedy this, which helped quite a bit. My other mistake was that it seemed that instead of gel food coloring, we had decorating gel, so the cookies were not very green. Oh well. Spencer helped me make the dough, press the cookies, and sprinkle them. I made peppernuts by myself while the kids were napping, and then later made up the cut-out cookie dough to refrigerate overnight.

The cut-out cookie dough also seemed a bit stiff, even though I decreased the amount of flour. I’m still getting used to baking in a dry climate. I couldn’t get the cookies rolled out quite as thin as my mom does. Maybe next year I will be in better practice. After we finished the cut-out cookies, Spencer helped me deliver some cookies to the neighbors.

Dave and Ellen’s holiday visit

Ellen and Meg are happy to be together

Dave and Ellen came out to visit this past weekend. We had a really great time. We bought a tree and decorated it, made cookies, and played a bunch with the kids. It was a sad farewell when they had to leave. Spencer gave Ellen and Dave each a car from the Cars set he had just gotten. I continue to be amazed by Spencer’s willingness to share.
