Spencer making an l-like sound

Spencer has been making funny noises for the last couple months. I have been capturing them on video occasionally. Here is a highlights reel. He has two different sounds in particular he likes to make. The first is kind of an l-like sound, in which he sticks his tongue out. The second is a more of a car noise, which is pretty much a voiced bilabial trill. I’m not exactly sure where he learned these sounds – definitely not from me. He could be trying to imitate some other sounds I make, or perhaps the sounds of other objects, like cars.

Spencer pushing the reel mower

Spencer likes his toy mower, but he likes the real mower better. Good thing that I have a reel mower, which is not too loud or dangerous for him to play with. Sometimes he helps me push it on the grass, but that is pretty difficult. So a few days ago he decided to push it on the sidewalk instead. As usual, this video doesn’t capture the best parts, but you get the idea. He actually pushed it back and forth on the sidewalk several times. I wasn’t able to finish mowing the yard, but that’s ok. This is also the first video I have posted from my new phone. It is not great, but not too bad.

After Clare was finished with her conference in San Francisco, we headed down the peninsula to Los Altos to visit our friends the Buchheits. Spencer had a really great time playing with Thomas, who will be two years old in a couple months. Spencer was also intrigued by Camilla, who will soon be five. Camilla and Thomas both have great personalities. Camilla seems to really enjoy sleeping at the moment. She constructs her “bed” every day on the couch, and gets mad if you try to sit there. She is polite about it though, saying “please move. you’re in the way”. Thomas is very much like Spencer, in that he enjoys playing with trucks and creating disorder.

It proved fairly difficult to document any of the time they spent playing together, as they were all moving pretty quickly. I did manage to get in a few photos and one decent video. The cutest part of the video is when Thomas brings Spencer his bottle and offers it to him. It seems that both Thomas and Spencer have a pretty big sharing instinct. They also like to grunt and play with bowls.

Another cute thing happened on our way home. We got to the airport a little early, so we had about 45 minutes to kill in the waiting area. Spencer and I walked around some and inspected the carts (anything with wheels is appealing to Spencer). For the last 30 minutes or so, a couple 9 year old twins sat down by us, and were very intrigued by Spencer. They played with him for most of the remaining time, and were really great. Just another reminder to me that most people in the world are friendly.

Spencer learning to walk

Based on his cruising abilities, we predicted Spencer would be walking by Thanksgiving. We then revised that estimate to Christmas, since he was getting so good at pushing around chairs. We were then sure that he would be walking by his first birthday, based on his ability to walk around with his Lightning McQueen car. It was starting to seem like Zeno’s dichotomy paradox. Spencer kept getting closer and closer to walking, but not there.

Well, this last week, his logarithmic improvements turned to exponential ones, and he has really started to take off. We spent the week in San Francisco. On Monday Spencer was starting to take 2-3 steps before grabbing onto something. By Friday he was up to 20-30, and by Sunday morning he was probably up to 100. He still reverts to crawling some, especially when he wants to play with with one of his beloved trucks. We are nonetheless very excited by his progress.

This video is from Paul and April’s house, where Spencer was highly encouraged to walk by Thomas’s example. Unfortunately, he also picked up on Thomas’s high-pitched squealing, though has yet to reach the lofty pitches or extreme amplitudes of Thomas.
